The artwork “REMI” aims to make the viewer think about issues related to war and peace. The artist has been inspired by the Nobel Peace Prize and asks a number of different questions related to the concept of peace.
Is there an evil and a good in a conflict? Where are the lines between good and evil? Where are the boundaries between right and wrong? Is it possible to see conflicts from a black and white perspective? Is there a right perspective? Can you fight for peace?
The artwork contains a variety of symbols connected to the subject. The chessboard, a representation of “us and them” as well as the strategies and progress the different sides use. The white flag, which shows that in a conflict one capitulates or is ready to negotiate. The feathers of the dove of peace, as a symbol of all those who had to give their lives.
The work’s title “REMI” comes from a Swedish chess term that means the game ends in a draw. In a chess game that ends in a draw, there are no winners, only losers.
The flag fades, the feathers fall and the war is finally over. But is it really peace?
